Ear Cleaning Tips: A Q&A with Natural Paws founder, Elyse Horvath

#ad Do you have a dog that needs ongoing ear cleanings? Shermie has a “yeast” issue – I clean his ears once a week to fight any brewing infections. There are times throughout the year that we end up visiting the Veterinarian as I can smell the yeast when I lift up his ear and he’s itching more than normal.

I reviewed a holistic remedy called EARoma ThEARapy from Natural Paws (it’s a sprayable cleaner) the last few months. I also use a medicated ear cleaning that our Veterinarian prescribes for Shermie and I’m demonstrating an ear cleaning in this demo:

I’m a big fan of the ingredients used in this product created by Natural Paws as Lemongrass and Eucalyptus have some great anti-bacterial properties. I also had the pleasure of talking with the owner of Natural Paws, Elyse Horvath. I asked her some questions about the product and the benefits for our animals with itchy ears!

Note that I’m not a Veterinarian and I strongly recommend you visit yours if your dog is experiencing discomfort and itching their ears a lot as these infections need to be treated. Don’t wait….

Ear cleaning tips from expert and founder of Natural Paws:

Q: The ear wash is so unique given it’s sprayable -why did you decide to design the product with that type of application?

A. The short answer is, so that we can do two things; clean the ear without flooding it, and keep from washing the dirt and debris down from the ear canal into the inner ear. The long version is an article I wrote, here:  http://naturalpaws.net/different-on-purpose/ (check out this article – it has great information!)

Q. What type of benefits do: Lemongrass and Eucalyptus have?

A. Lemongrass Essential Oil and Eucalyptus Essential Oil both provide clarifying, anti-bacterial, while deterring insects like mites and mosquitoes.

Q. Do you have any ear maintenance cleaning tips for readers?

A. Since it’s a new thing for any dog to have product sprayed into their ear, it’ll be a little bit of a surprise at first. To accustom the skittish dog to this, I recommend spraying it near the dog the first time but not into the ear. Give the dog praise and perhaps a treat, for not being afraid, and then next time really apply the product according to the directions. For general use, I recommend following the directions, which direct the user to spray 2-5 spritzes into the ear from about 1-2 inches away, giving the ear a massage with the ear flap down, allowing the dog to shake, and then following up with a cotton ball to wipe clean any remaining dirt or debris.

Some dogs produce a lot of ear discharge/wax, so they’ll need more frequent cleanings. My cocker spaniel needed her ears cleaned weekly at a minimum, but our mixed-breed dog only gets itchy/stinky about every 3-4 weeks.

Disclaimer: We received these products from Natural Paws as part of their blogger program in exchange for an honest review.  I only share information about products that I believe in and already fit into our doggie lifestyle and routine. Natural Paws did not compensate me for this post.

  1. We have really been enjoying Natural Paws Ditch the Itch Spray. It really helps keep Ruby calm

Sheba needs her ears cleaned every 2-3 weeks, and I definitely prefer all natural products to do so. This brand sounds great. Oddly, our beagle Cricket doesn’t need hers cleaned quite as often, but I always check them when I do Sheba’s.

    • Sherm is the same way – that wax just builds up! I really like this product and the sprayable application is unique too. I think it’s great your Beagle doesn’t need as frequent cleanings!
