A Vacation Without My Dogs

DSC_0783

I trust that when you read this, you won’t think I’m nuts!

We’re planning two separate trips this summer. And I hate leaving my dogs behind. I work from home and even though there are moments when I think I’ve spent too much time talking to them about my to do’s for the day, I dread leaving them even for one night.

These are two separate trips and only two nights each. Does anyone else feel this way?

I have conversations in my head when I’m walking them:

  • Who else other than our dog walker of ten years can walk our reactive dog?
  • Who else knows Bruiser well enough to anticipate his barks and senior dog needs? And he’s cranky…
  • Sweet Walter, has a set routine and he loves it, what will happen if we stray from that for a few days?

I’ve interviewed countless pet sitters over email and compared all the new sites like Rover and Dog Vacay. I found one pet sitter and we’re doing a meet and greet in a few weeks.

I’ve made her a key hoping she’s the one! Why is this so stressful? I’ll talk more about this in another post. Please post comments on how you feel when you need to go away for a few days? Do you have any questions about this process?

Aw, how stressful. And I know just what you mean. Hubby and I can’t go on long trips together, as someone has to stay with our dogs and cats. We can take short hops with the dogs in the car, but if the dogs can’t come, someone has to stay home.

    • It’s so stressful -I appreciate your note as I was secretly hoping I wasn’t the only one that goes through this when we have to go away — anywhere. We also take trips separately too as our dogs seem to be very high maintenance! Thanks for commenting.

  2. I absolutely feel terrible leaving Ruby behind. She has abandonment issues and I feel awful every morning when I leave for work. We have had her as part of our family for about three years and have only left her a few times. We have been fortunate to take her with us on many trips. This summer we are going to be taking a week long trip and can’t bring her with – I’m already totally stressed about it and it’s three months away

    • I feel the EXACT same way about leaving them behind. I plan like 6 months ahead and my husband thinks I’m crazy. I’m sorry sweet Ruby has abandonment issues as that makes it so much harder. Our old dog, Bruiser, does too. We try to take the dogs with us everywhere. I had a lot of success with the initial Rover sitter and she only does overnights on the weekend so now I’m trying to find someone for during the week as I need someone to stay at our house. I’ll report back as I’m meeting the new sitter in a few weeks. I think Rover has very good sitter – but word of mouth I suppose is best and then still… I get it, I’m glad I’m not the only one…
